Procedure

Belly button reshaping, called Umbilicoplasty is a surgical procedure to change the appearance or shape of the belly button.

There may be several possible reasons for this surgery:

  1. Altering the shape of the belly button to achieve a certain shape
  2. Correcting scarring caused by surgery or piercing
  3. Changing a protruding belly button to a non-protruding belly button
  4. Removing a lump caused by a hernia

Belly button reshaping can be performed alone or sometimes performed as part of a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) or lower body lift operations.

Length

1 hour

Anaesthesia

Local with sedation (sometimes general anaesthesia is used)

Inpatient/Outpatient

Day case or 1 night stay

Risks

Overall umbilicoplasty is a safe procedure and complications are rare. However like all cosmetic procedures there are risks involved. There are general risks associated with surgery as well as risks specific to this procedure. Your surgeon will discuss these with you during your consultation. These include infection, an irregular or a "lop-sided" appearance of the belly button (which may require further surgery to correct), excessive scarring, blood or fluid collection under the skin and reaction to anaesthesia.

Scars?

The surgeon will generally make the necessary incisions within the belly button. The resulting scars are usually well concealed and are not outwardly visible.

Recovery

  1. days time off work

Getting back to normal/sport 1-7 days (bruising and swelling are usually quite light and short-lived)

Results

Usually, umbilicoplasty results are permanent, however the effect can be reversed if you gain significant amounts of weight or become pregnant following surgery.
